Kiel Castle, once the secondary residence of the Gottorf dukes, is considered one of the most noteworthy buildings in Schleswig-Holstein. Built in 1242, it functioned, among other things, as the estate of the Danish King Frederick I, was remodeled by Catherine the Great and finally severely damaged by heavy air raids during World War II. The castle, which was burned to the ground, was subsequently rebuilt and is now home to a cultural center, along with over 300 different events that take place on the grounds each year. With a short walk parallel to the Kieler Wall, a visit to the castle can be combined with a pleasant parking option in the Q-Park Altstadt parking garage.
