The Georgspalast was built shortly before the outbreak of the First World War as a business and office building. Concerts with popular orchestras were held in the integrated café-restaurant from the mid-1920s. Partially destroyed during the Second World War, the building was subsequently rebuilt. In 1947, the GOP Varieté Theatre opened on the same site and experienced its peak in the 1950s. With the advent of television, attendance declined and the theatre closed in 1962. In December 1992 the theatre was reopened after 30 years.
