The moated castle built in the 13th century, today known as the Residenzschloss, passed into the possession of the Hessian landgraves in 1479. After Darmstadt was elevated to the status of a royal seat in 1567, the castle was rebuilt. After the castle burnt down in 1715, the construction of a new Baroque castle was commissioned but never completed due to financing problems. To this day, a wide variety of architectural styles can be seen in the castle complex. While the façade is designed in the Baroque style, there are still Renaissance-style buildings behind it. Our
