On the south side of the market square is the cultural monument, the old town hall. In the past, the meeting room of the city councillors and the gallery were located in this building. Nowadays, only the registry office can be found there and the Darmstädter Ratskeller brewery in the basement. The market square in front of it was built in the 14th century and remains true to its market character to this day, with the weekly market taking place there every Wednesday and Saturday and the Christmas market at Christmas time.
