The Gropius Bau is a rectangular building completed in 1881, which today houses large temporary exhibitions. The architect Martin Gropius based his style on the Italian Renaissance and provided his building with 4 floors. Originally, the Gropius Building belonged to an ensemble of several museums that were closely related in terms of both location and the themes on display. It was built as an arts and crafts museum.
In the so-called Museum Quarter, however, only the Gropius Building remained after the destruction brought about by the Second World War. After the demolition of the ruins of the Gropius Building was prevented, it was given the status of a listed building in 1966 and named after its architect.
Since the Berlin Wall ran directly in front of the main entrance to the Gropius Building during the division of Germany, it had to be moved to another side of the building. This situation was reversed between 1998 and 2000, when the Gropius Bau underwent further extensive renovation work. The reopening was celebrated in 1999 with an extensive exhibition on the theme of "50 Years of the History of the FRG".
