The origin of the Brandenburg Gate goes back to 1670, when Dorotheenstadt was built. At that time, it consisted of a rampart that was breached and a moat over which a drawbridge ran. Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a national symbol of Germany, known far beyond its own borders and the last remaining of the former 18 city gates of the state capital.
With its architecture, the Brandenburg Gate heralded classicism in what was then Prussia. In its present form, it was built between 1789 and 1793 during a 4-year construction period. It was commissioned by the Prussian King Frederick William II and developed according to the plans of Carl Gotthard Langhans. It formed the end of the boulevard "Unter den Linden".
The Brandenburg Gate is the symbol par excellence when it comes to German history. Be it the end of Napoleon's rule, the Weimar Republic, the Cold War or the division of Germany into East and West. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the Brandenburg Gate has of course been the main symbol of Germany's reunification.
