Popular with tourists and locals alike, Alexanderplatz is located in the centre of Berlin and is one of the busiest squares in Europe today. It was named in 1805 after Alexander I, the Russian Tsar. With its rectangular shape, Alexanderplatz covers an area of 8 hectares. Every day, around 360,000 people pass through here, strolling, shopping or looking for recreation.
The retail trade at Alexanderplatz offers its customers a wide variety of shopping opportunities. Particularly well-known here are the shopping centres "Galeria Kaufhof", "Alexa", the "Rathauspassagen" and "die Mitte". These are crowd pullers for both locals and visitors, alongside popular sights such as the TV tower and the red town hall.
In the 1960s, East Berlin's administration had the former roundabout, where trams and cars crossed paths, converted into a pedestrian-only zone. Only the Alexander and Berolinahaus on Alexanderplatz remained untouched by the restructuring. In the years of the Second World War, the popular square had to cope with a number of air raids, was massively destroyed, rebuilt and redesigned several times. In the 1970s, well-known buildings were built here, such as the "Interhotel Stadt Berlin", which is now known as the "Park Inn", and the "HO-Centrum-Warenhaus", now known as "Galeria Kaufhof".
